Toothwort

One of the most bizarre native plants to grow in the British Isles can be found growing in Hastings. This parasitic plant taps into the roots of trees and shrubs to feed and has therefore has no need for leaves or green chlorophyll. The plant exists as an almost colourless flower spike rising from the rootstock of its host tree or shrub.

The best place to see this plant in Hastings is undoubtedly Alexandra Park where large numbers of flower spikes can be seen in a few places around the park from around the boating lake up into Old Roar Gill Local Nature Reserve.
